Ehrlich Steinberg is pleased to present the solo exhibition Gazette by London-based Canadian artist Daniel Taylor. The exhibition includes a new series of wall reliefs and sculpture centered around French New Wave director Jean-Luc Godard’s 1960 film Breathless. Carved in styrofoam and coated in papier-mâché, the painted wall reliefs depict various stills from the film, focusing on scenes that include newspapers and character contemplation. Figures are shown peering over news articles or absorbed in thought as they read and maneuver through the city. For Taylor, the newspaper functions as a device to propel Breathless’s storyline and suggests the ongoing cycle of media consumption that continues to shape life over sixty years after the film’s release.

Wrapping around the gallery, the reliefs recall both panoramic, cyclic views and out-of-sync narratives. This is further explored in 101 Dalmatians, a sculpture of a dalmatian dog with one hundred smaller versions of itself springing out from each other. The sculpture’s spots comically mirror the black and white film, while its uncanny copies point to the reliefs’ reconfigured narrative structure.

Gazette deploys a logic of repetition, as characters seem bound to ritual and familiarity. However, diverging from the film’s storyline, these routines are simultaneously disrupted, foregrounding a heightened sense of paranoia and alienation. In this way, Taylor reconfigures Godard’s prescient use of communication to suggest the parallels of contemporary life: a series of siloed individual experiences connected by the often isolating dominance of the media.

Daniel Taylor (b. 1986, Prince Edward Island, CA) received a BFA from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (N.S.C.A.D.) (2011). His work has been presented in exhibitions at Larder, Los Angeles, CA (2022); Ginsberg, Lima, PE (2021); 650mAh, Hove, UK (2019); Airy Yamanashi, Kofu, JP (2019) and Arbyte Studios, London, UK (2019). Taylor had a residency at Palazzo Monti, Brescia, IT in 2024 and a residency at Metropolitan Fukujusou, Kyoto, JP in 2023.
